  • Dry Fly Fishing the South Fork Through the Seasons

The Ted Trueblood Chapter meets Wednesday, September 14 at the MK Nature Center behind the Idaho Fish and Game Headquarters.

The program for the evening starts at 7:30 pm we will have Nate Brumley, the owner of Dry Fly Innovations, an online fishing company out of Meridian, Idaho. DFI specializes in custom dry flies and fishing videos.

Nate is a native Idahoan, born and raised on the Salmon River, and he has dry fly fished the Northwest for over 40 years. That experience has led to the creation of over a hundred unique dry fly patterns that have been tested over some of the smartest fish on the planet with amazing results.

Nate’s presentation, “Season’s of the South Fork” is a unique look at dry fly fishing the South Fork. Hatch charts, cool footage, photos, and awesome dry fly patterns. It will give you the tools to fool a lot of big fish.

The meeting is at the MK Nature Center, behind the IDFG Headquarters Office, 600 South Walnut. A fly tying session begins at 6:30 pm with the regular meeting/program beginning at 7:30. Hope to see you there.

  • Waiting for 300 cfs

Word on the street, or should we say stream, is that the flow releases out of Anderson Ranch will drop to the minimum 300 cfs flows on or around September 15.  You can keep an eye on our handy Current Conditions page, or access the other websites with the flow graphs.  Specific date aside, we know for certain there is a lot of water in Anderson Ranch, and we it appears La Nina is Back — which could mean another year of favorable winter snowpack in the Pacific Northwest.

  • New Gage at Neal Bridge

A new measuring station has been established at Neal Bridge.  The US Geological Survey and Bureau of Reclamation installed the gage and it has been reporting river flows since May 2011. (more…)

  • When South Fork Flows Drop: A History Lesson and a Prediction

This is the time of summer when thoughts and conversations among fly anglers turn to the question of when Anderson Ranch Dam flows will drop from the summer boating flows to the wading flows of late summer and fall.

You might hear hushed, brief conversations at the fly shops.  The USGS and Bureau of Reclamation river flow web pages get more looks.  People start to look at some days in September they can block on their calendar.

Unlike the precision of Friday night lights coming on the last weekend in August for high school football, the exact days for the flows dropping is different year to year.  Our prediction is after the jump:

  • Updated format for southforkboise.org

After a few weeks of work we now have launched an updated version of southforkboise.org.

Our goal is to have a website where we can incorporate news and updates more frequently.  At the same time we will keep many permanent resources available for people who want to look at data and studies about the South Fork Boise River.  All the updates from the southforkboise.tumblr.com page have been brought over.  The tumbler page is now retired.

A culvert replacement project will be launched this fall at Pierce Creek, funded in part by the Southwest Idaho Resource Advisory Committee.  We will report developments on that project and in the coming weeks project an update on river flows and projections for the future.
